They tell me you’re strong, son,
I tell them you’re kind.
Your heart is courageous,
and you know your own mind.
You’re gentle with small things,
you’re sweet to your core,
but brave new adventures,
and long to explore.
I know that each struggle
you’ll still at least try.
I hope you remember
it’s normal to cry.
Don’t sweat all the cool kids,
make friends with the nerds,
embrace all your weird parts,
break out from the herd.
Be good to the loved ones
you bring in your house,
be patient and open,
(and laugh with your spouse).
I hope that you’ll travel,
with friends or alone,
but know that you’ll always
have space here at home.
All this I wish for you,
my sweet, brilliant son,
our bond will grow stronger
your life’s just begun.
Love the boy that’s inside you -
love the man you’ll become.
